Current Activities: The first program of Shift Unlimited is the Semesters for Social Innovation initiative, which is based on creating co-op placements for high school students within sustainable businesses and enterprising social-mission organizations. A pilot version of this project will launch with an inaugural Shifting Session being hosted February 11th 2007 at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St West) to initiate co-op placements for second semester (February until June). This event is mandatory for students and organizations who wish to participate in the program.

Short-Term Future: To initiate Shift Placements for the 2007/08 school year, Shift will be hosting a second series of Shifting Sessions throughout June 2007, including a session already planned for June 3rd at the Gladstone Hotel. The second run of this program will be more comprehensive, involving more co-op placements, a more intensive student selection process, and a comprehensive summer training and community-building program.

Through a partnership with The Director’s Cut and Flipside Productions, Shift will spend February 2007 to April 2007 preparing a comprehensive presentation for Grade 10 Careers classes to generate interest in the 2007/08 session of the Semesters for Social Innovation program. This presentation will be presented to students throughout the Greater Toronto Area during May 2007.

Long-term Future: In the future, Shift’s activities will include: advocating for a more flexible education system to promote the growth of Shift Placements; developing new programs to better prepare students for their placements; creating channels for Semesters for Social Innovation alumni to utilize their experience into the future; and most significantly, working with regional liaisons to replicate the Semesters for Social Innovation program throughout North America.
